Andrew Lucchesi wondered whether Asian (or other) readers
might be confused by italics. Andrew, I can't imagine how
that's possible given how similar most italics are to the
base (Roman) font. (In some font families, you really have
to look closely to detect the difference.) What I _can_
imagine being confusing is the use of italics... if you're
not consistent, or if you use them obscurely, you'll
confuse all readers, whatever their provenance.

Your colleague may also have meant "script" fonts rather
than italics, and indeed, some of these are so ornately
calligraphed that even native English readers have
difficulty.
