I wanted to be the first to jump in and recommend a terrific book:
Managing Your Documentation Projects
by JoAnn T. Hackos
John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; ISBN 0-471-59099-1
It might be overkill for managing a single project, but I'm positive it will
help them in the real world. As a bonus, I found it interesting and easy to
read.
