Brett Wetzell <wbwetzel -at- EOS -dot- NCSU -dot- EDU> wrote an interesting essay about
Net communications. Brett, I'd wish you'd have given your message a
subject. <g>
I think the reason subscribers to communications-related mailing lists
and newsgroups are more anal about the usage in others' posts is that
most people tend to be anal about the things that interest them.
On a mailing list about dogs, for instance, you won't find many gripes
about dangling participles, but get a breed name wrong and you'll likely
hear about it! On a newsgroup about firearms, most people won't look
twice if you write "know" when you meant to write "no", but call a
shotgun a rifle and prepare to be corrected.
I intended to say more, but it's quitting time and my ride is waiting for
me. But I think I said enough.
