Have you ever tried to use one with the graphics turned off? No
ALT text makes them unusable.

That's not a problem with imagemaps, that's a problem with the designer.
I've never seen an imagemap with ALT text. I wasn't aware that it was
possible to have. If you replace an imagemap with ALT text, which of the
image's links would it go to? IME, pages with text alternatives to
imagemaps have them as separate text links, which spoil the look of the
page when graphics are switched on.

ALT text should be used in place of *every* graphic, and anything that requires
graphics must also have a text possibility. It's so simple and easy to do that
it's almost criminal not to.
I wholeheartedly concur with that! That's one of the reasons I don't like
imagemaps.
