Sorry to wander here. Geoff, you reminded me of a cute but dramatic
flamefest that happened on another list.
This doesn't
even include regional dialect differences (e.g., "root for
the home team" means very different things in America,
where this is encouraged, and in Australia, where it would
be illegal if you accepted money for doing it).
On the list in question, one self-appointed wit suggested the email address
"root -at- whitehouse -dot- gov" as being an appropriate place to send email to
Hillary Clinton. His implication, of course, was that she was the one in
charge. There was an Australian on the list who was also apparently a
Hillary fan, and he went postal over that. It took a long series of email
exchanges before he calmed down enough to say what set him off.
Sometimes dialect differences aren't so harmless.
