>Why have blank pages at all? Why must a chapter begin on the right?
>
This one dates back to the same research that determined that people
generally first read the article at the top right of a newspaper page.
And those research studies were done about the same time as the original
Rudolf Flesch readability studies, if memory serves.
The gist is that most people look to the choice on the right first, then
to other choices. It also follows that if you want a chapter to begin on
a right page, and the previous chapter ends on a right page, one needs
to insert a blank page facing the new chapter's first page.
There have been subsequent studies that show people's eyes are drawn by
graphics or white space, but I don't believe anyone has ever disproven
that, in general, people look to the top right first.
