Christine,
Thanks for the follow-up.
I think the company in question is probably just trying to pursue all
avenues to find the right person to fill the position, perhaps as quickly as
possible.
Agencies who find permanent employment for someone will typically charge the
hiring company a percentage of the annual salary. For administrative help,
this may be 5-10 percent. I'm not sure how much higher that percentage can
raise to.
However, I would not ask the agency to divulge the fee amount. I believe
this is proprietary info. And if you're the right person for the job, the
company will hire you regardless of the fee. I would never assume that
you're at a disadvantage because of an agency fee. This company would never
have submitted a request to the agency if they weren't serious about hiring
someone the agency suggested.
They also included the standard clause that you can't work for anyone who
they refer you to but doesn't employ you through the agency for one year.
This clause protects the agency against any company that does the "We don't
want to pay the agency fee, but we want to hire you..." routine, or any
employee that would be willing to offer the same such circumstance in an
effort to be hired.
I believe that you cannot work for that company without going through the
agency for one year, regardless of the position.
