What i have done in a similar situation is to initial that clause -
cross off a few words (such as similar services) and say see
attachment. I then provided a statement to the effect that ABC Company
recognizes that I am a qualified.... hired for my expertise as a ......
and that confidential and proprietary information gained during the
contract will not be disclosed to other clients.
Does it work? It may... they will probably send it to their legal
department... and at least it will buy you some time. Their legal
department may say ok... or may want it reworded. If the legal
department is friendly, maybe you don't need legal advice... If you
plan to continue contracting, probably best to send the contracts first
to a lawyer or at least have a lawyer draft a statement that covers the
similar services.
Hope this helps.
