It seems to me that layout has meaning.
Rather than worry about inconclusive studies that show small differences
in readability, think about what the different layouts say. Look at some
texts, and consider the tone and the subtleties of point of view.
Realize that the meaning varies with media and culture. For example,
full justification in email screams either "commercial" or "raving" (and
looks real funny in proportional fonts) while it's implications in other
media are much more subtle and not necessarily bad.
