The media/communications specialist works with faculty and staff in the
College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences to produce
print and electronic publications. As part of a creative team, the
specialist manages the editorial and production phases for each assigned
project, in the context of a new emphasis in the unit on merging
traditional print and new electronic publishing. The media/communications
specialist provides leadership, training, and some technical support in
the publications section with regards to publishing information in
electronic formats.
Position Title: Media/Communications Specialist, Publications
Academic professional, full-time, 12-month appointment
Location: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; College of
Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences
Duties and Responsibilities: Tasks include:
*defining project objectives with clients
*reviewing manuscripts
*analyzing and organizing publication messages
*adapting materials to specific audiences
*editing, proofreading, and some rewriting
*coordinating design, printing, and electronic distribution
*converting electronic documents to HTML and Acrobat PDF formats
*evaluation studies
*in-service teaching
Qualifications and Experience:
*A bachelor's degree, preferably in a communications-related area
*Two years of professional editorial experience; project management
also desired
*Superb editing and proofreading skills
*Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize, and take initiative
*Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
*Working knowledge of print and Web publishing conventions and
procedures for both text and images
*Demonstrated aptitude for learning new technologies
*Proficiency in HTML coding (by hand and using software like
Pagemill)
*Experience with desktop publishing tools (PageMaker, Xpress,
Photoshop, Acrobat)
*Demonstrated ability on both Windows and Macintosh operating
systems
