TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Interleaf is a high-end desktop publishing tool. It was
probably the first with the sole purpose of documenting
technical information. It is powerful and can do ALOT.
It is also a very big BEAR to use. I have not worked on
it in almost 3 years so some of these things might
have changed.
* It does not work well with other programs (porting
to and from is a big pain)
* It defaults to en-dashes rather than hyphens (causes
major problems in indexing)
* Hard to fix problems with the Index
* So mouse intensive that RSIs (Repetitive Stress Injuries)
are easy to get. Take breaks and exercise your wrists.
Those are a few of the problems I found when I worked on
it. The plus is Frame seems like a cakewalk once you
know Interleaf. I am glad I learned Ileaf at the starting
of my career. Also, there is a big demand for people
around here who know it.
On a personal note: I noticed by your address that you
are at Texas A&M. Did you just graduate? I'm class of '90.
Beat the <heck> out of tu (whoop).
Good luck in your new job.
