This sounds like you're so stuck in "focus group" mode that you have
forgotten how to write without it. If the company does not want to
do extensive, or even brief, audience analysis, the answer is to
write for a general audience.
And this sounds like you didn't read Eric's message. Or is there something
special about your "general audience" that isn't Eric's "general newspaper
audience?"
In the statements quoted above, you're performing an audience analysis
before you write; it's implied in your "write for a general audience."
