A good description of the difference, Jane. QA testing also makes
sure the software meets the minimum quality standards the organization
has set, for example; time to install, running for x hours without
crashing the PC, time to perform specific functions (such as retrieve
data from a server in a specific environment) etc.

Our QA folks comment on usability also, especially as representatives
of experienced, sophisticated users. They see enough of the program
to find inconsistencies, differences in function/wording, etc. QA and
Tech Pubs are really allies here--we team up to get product
improvements, and QA suggests quick fixes before engineering can make
real fixes.

Hope this helps, Virginia

QA Testing makes sure the program works the way the engineer intends it
to.

Usability testing makes sure the program works the way the user
wants/needs/expects it to.

Most companies do a fair job of QA testing, but smaller orgs (like mine,
unfortunately) tend to skimp on usability testing.
