I don't know much about master documents because my one experience was
so awful that I stay away from them now, although the concept is great.

One thing, though--have you tried to open your document different
ways? When you open a document itself or open it though the master
document,
the styles may be different. Any style changes you make when you open the
document itself only apply to the document when you reopen it the same
way.
Any styles you make to a file opened thorough the master document only
apply when the file is re-opened through master document. Or so it
seemed to me.

I don't know if this will help or not. Also, when I was working with
master documents, my files kept getting corrupted. I curious to see
what others say. Good luck.
