If your captions contain a lot of information in multiple sentences,
then they aren't really captions. Personally, I would consider the way
the captions would look in the TOC, as Beverly suggested. I would also
consider the way you would identify these captions in an index. Remember
that captions are simply references to information already set out in
text.
In a "minimalist" fashion, you could even make all reference in text and
simply call the figure "Figure 1." It depends on the document and the
audience.
