The 72 dpi is the size of your "output", in this case, it is your
monitor. Just because you are limited by your output, doesn't mean you
are limited to the size of your original. You just don't need to go
above the resolution of your output device, which is probably why you
have been keeping everything at 72 dpi.

When you capture the image (I use paint shop pro), saving as a JPG/JIF,
PCX, TIF or WPG should give you an option for what dpi you use. In
PhotoShop, I believe there is a menu item to change the resolution
before you save. You can always have an original file which has a
higher dpi than your output device (monitor, printer, etc.). You just
can't get a better output by exceeding the output device (i.e. if the
printer wants a 300 dpi image, you will NOT get a better output by
sending them a 600 dpi image. 300 is as high as you should go). Let me
know if this helps.
