You may be chasing a "future feature". I've searched for this feature as
well and have resigned to saving table designs in a template. When I want
one, I choose file/new and select the template that contains the tables.
Using copy and paste, I place it into the desired doc. If you have lots of
table designs, you could store them in separate templates, categorizing them
as you go.
Other options include using AutoCorrect or a macro, but they've got too many
downsides for my use.

Subject: Re: Word 97 and creating table formats
Hi, all,
I've been beating my brains out trying to find a way to create tailored
table formats in Word 97. They have several "canned" ones to choose
from which are mainly variations on colors and borders/non-borders. I
need something more specific than that to save me time in setting up
document templates.
Unfortunately, my current employer does not want to go to Framemaker at
this time, so I'm stuck with Word. Anybody figured out how to trick the
darn thing into doing this???
