FYI, this Spring Semester, 1999, NC State University will be offering a
web-based version of ENG 421, Computer Documentation Design. The course

a conventional, classroom-based version of the course.

Course Overview
This course explores the theory and design of instructional, procedural,
and declarative materials for computer software and hardware, including
user guides, reference manuals, quick reference guides, tutorials, online
and web-based documentation. Students will gain significant experience with
Internet-based communication applications. Particular attention will be
paid to various documentation testing procedures, including numerous
approaches to audience analysis, competitive assessment, and usability
testing, as they inform the design of effective, user-centered information.
The course is offered via the WWW and, therefore, some experience with
