Subject: Training Plans and Materials
I can't fully describe how to go about developing the training for this
project in this email. In my previous life as an instructional designer, I
wrote a manual about designing training curricula and courses.
However, here is my down and dirty, quick and easily methodology for
designing instruction
1 -- Fully define the audience. What expectations will they have? What do
they already know? If possible interview potential training participants
2 --Write a behavioral objective for the course -- A task-based objective
that can be measured. Typically, a behavioral objective has 3 parts --
condition, task, standard.
For instance, Given instructions for setting up a lab <condition>, the
participants will assemble the lab equipment <task> in order for it to be
successfully used in the next exercise <standard>.
3 -- Create your last (or culminating) exercise. This exercise should
directly test the participants and demonstrate that they have mastered the
objective.
4 -- Break down the information you need to give the participants in order
to complete the final exercise into reasonable chunks, these will become
your lessons.
5 -- Write behavioral objectives for each lesson. Keep mind the course
objective and make sure each lesson objective is somehow supporting the
course objective.
6-- Write the exercises for each lesson.
7-- Write the lessons using the objectives and exercises as your *thesis*
statement -- all material presented in a lesson must in someway help the
participant successfully master the objective.
8-- Test your exercises to make sure they work.
9-- Practice presenting your class, practice, practice, practice.
10 -- And finally, if you're so inclined, type Instructional Design in the
Alta Vista search engine and you'll come up with a long list of sites to
peruse.
