A resource which would be of great help is one of the Oxford-Duden
pictorial dictionaries. They have everything from the innards of a car
to the contents of a shopping cart to what hangs in your closet. You
can find the equipment etc. you're working with and see what the various
parts are called in that language.
I've used these in French, German and Spanish. They're
wonderful and
really help with colloquial naming. If you can't find them in an
ordinary bookstore, most university bookstores will carry them as
language references. And they're not to expensive -- the last one I got
was in the Harvard Bookstore for about $18.95. Invaluable.
