I certainly don't prescribe to C. Leonard's recommendation to "be patient and
persistent. When you stop fiddling with the formatting, Word will stop
screwing up".

working around the numbered list problem in Word 97. Believe you have to
follow the link for the current month's tip to get to this tip. Although it
takes a bit to set up initially, it works wonderfully - no more screwed-up
numbered lists. I HIGHLY recommend it to save your time and sanity!
