Baclay--
I haven't had this problem, but someone in our training department has had
this problem. Their temporary fix was to remove all links to PowerPoint
slides. Here is a quote from what they discovered: "However, if you have any
linked PP slides in your Word files, be advised of one of the problems we
unearthed while trying to debug the unbridled growth of Word files: You must
have the PP file open BEFORE you open the Word file in which the PP slides
are linked. If the PP file is not opened first, AND if the links are set to
Automatic updating, Word will attempt to update the individually linked
slide by attaching the entire PP file..."
As of a couple of weeks ago, they still didn't have a solution, but they
also hadn't had a chance to call Word tech supp. FYI, I haven't searched the
Microsoft Knowledgebase for this problem.

Subject: Word and PowerPoint, linking
Hello, all.
I'm inserting PowerPoint slides in a Word document by linking to
them so that someone can edit them from the Word document.
The original Word document was about 1 MB and the
PowerPoint file is about 1 MB as well, but the Word document
with the links to PowerPoint has grown to about 6 MB.
Can you tell me why this would happen? The file size is majorly
slowing down my poor processor.
I used the Edit -> Paste Special option to link to the slides.
Here's the field code for a slide link:
{ LINK PowerPoint Slide 8 "path:\\filename.ppt." "395" \a \p }
