I have done some technical _writing_ for royalties in the past. I knew the
guy who created the software well, and I knew he wouldn't rip me off. But it
was still a leap of faith. The guy was serious and excellent, but he was
practically broke, so I did not get paid _anything_ up front! Just a flat
amount every time he sold one of his software packages. It turned out that I
made much, MUCH (we're talking A LOT...!) more money than I would have made
if he had paid me my regular rate for the job. But then again, I guess I was
lucky...
