Larry,
I looked at your form and did not see the effect you described. Here's
what I think is happening.
Netscape calculates the physical size of a text box based on the Fixed
Width Font specification in the user's browser preference settings
(Preferences | Appearance | Fonts). In other words, it looks at the
point size specified there and the width in pixels of a character in
that font at that size at the current screen resolution, and multiplies
by the number of characters specified for the box, then adds a little
extra cushion.
Thus the box width in Netscape varies from user to user, independent of
any font specifications you provide.
Try changing your fixed width font preference to a dramatically smaller
point size, then exiting Netscape, restarting your computer, and firing
it up again. I think you'll see that the box is smaller.
FWIW my settings are "Monotype.com" (nice-looking fixed-width font
available from Microsoft), 12 pt, on a screen resolution of 1024 x 768.
Good luck,
Dick
