TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
If that rule was taken to heart, my apologies. That
was a younger, less experienced Bill Swallow (who was
perhaps over-influenced by a company who really didn't
know anything about online help development).
Could it take 4-6 hours per Help topic? Sure. Should
it? Hopefully not.
That range includes the time to do all of the
following:
* develop content
* proof content
* crete the topic
* link it into the Help system
* test it
* fix if needed
Considering the tools I was using and how I was
getting content for the Help, I think 4-6 hours might
have been on the money. But, now that I'm
single-sourcing all of my content to Help, and now
that I do this without having to manually mess around
with the Help, my Help authoring time is down to less
than 1 hour per topic (sometimes several per hour).
