Unless there's some sort of neat-o emmulator for
character-based applications that is x-browser,
x-platform compliant, I don't see how the application
will go online without an interface redesign
(Oracle?).
But, if you are stuck with command line navigation,
look to structure your manual by task. Also provide a
field and screen reference for the screens in the back
of the book. I suggest doing the latter first. This
way you can then create a story board of screens for
each task you need to document, and then discuss what
the user needs to do on each screen.
Also (and I know this is less than optimal), if you
document your screens and their respective fields
first, and don't have time to create a task-based
manual, at least you have the screens done. Your users
will at least know what does what on the various
screens. You can then always pump out the task-driven
docs over the next few weeks/months. If it is months,
I suggest informally releasing completed tasks or
chapters as they are finished and OK'd.
HTH...
