    As a writer, I believe in writing my draft withut regard to an original
estimate of word or page count. I have one standard here: write until I have
provided all the information  necessary to accomplish the objective I set
out to accomplish.

    Then, and only then, I set upu to self-edit my copy down to the size I
want it. Most of the time I have little difficulty in reducing the verbiage
without losing any important information. Most of us do not write
economically, but we squirt verbiage with great gusto. It's probably a
pretty good rule of thumb that you can reduce most drafts by one-third
without losing anything of substance. Write to tell your tale. Edit to
achieve your desired size. - Herm
