RE: Translation: simplified English or controlled language tools such as MAXit
just curious: how does the translator compensate for the cost of the translation memory system? and the time invested to master it?
What many translators used to do is employ TM on their own, then reuse the translated assets on subsequent translations. Now, I don't know if they charged for the total number of words when they did this or if they charged a fee for storing and reusing the translated assets, but they saved a lot of time, and that allowed them to take on more work.
Now days, more companies are savvy about localization, and they expect to have translation memories. Localization companies simply require it for some projects, but they perform all of the preparation and file management, so the translator only has to deal with the translation and not the prep work that goes along with getting files into TMs.
There are certainly trade offs, but I think it balances out.
