Subject:Why we are on this list (was RE: A/An) From:"Cook, Jenise" <jenise -dot- cook-crabbe -at- pacificlife -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- raycomm -dot- com> Date:Wed, 11 Jul 2001 10:30:54 -0700
Jo, well said! Isn't this what the list is for? There are TWs at different
levels of their careers on this list. Plus, with over 4,000 members around
the globe, we are helping our fellow writers who speak English as a second
(or third, or fourth) language, and whose companies do not have access to
native English TWs, for whatever reason.
Plus, as Jo mentioned, there are those in our work places who times want us
to provide sources to back up our arguments for why we do what we do.
Over the years I've relied on *Dictionary of Problem Words and Expressions*
by Harry Shaw for guidance on questions such as this. I highly recommend
such books to all writers.
Everyone, I don't mean this to start a war about whether to post a question
like this to the list, or how much research one should do beforehand. I am
just sharing information about a resource I have found helpful. (Having a
printed resource also lets you demonstrate the correctness of your choice
should some pointy-haired boss say "well I just think 'a SI' sounds
better.")
