Where I'm currently employed (and every other place I've worked) salary
information is considered confidential. We're not to discuss the topic of
how much we make with other employees, let alone someone not employed here.

Agree. Everywhere I've worked salary information is confidential and it's a
violation of the law to reveal it to another potential employer. About all a
former employer can say, these days, is that you did work there, what your
title/role was and how long you worked there. If an HR dept. goes much
beyond that (excepting criminal activities which are already public record),
they are facing a potential lawsuit.
As an aside, I posted a comment earlier indicating that being 'vague' was
OK. Let me clarify that by saying that to me "vague" means something like no
more than +/- 15% of current salary/rate. As a contractor I've taken
projects below the market when I was really interested in them technically
or when other factors, such as a short commute, made that desirable. I would
never feel I was saddled with that below market rate when I was out looking
for my next contract.
