Re: Contracting in Vancouver, BC, Canada
If you're interested, I've got a list of software companies that you might
want to contact. It is by no means exhaustive, but it was something my
brother and I assembled a couple of years ago when he was looking for a job.
You might also check www.bctechnology.com.
To give everyone an idea of the opportunities in Vancouver:
The companies on my own list now numbers 913 (It was up 1100 a few years ago, but a malign feline ran away with the disk and I had to recreate it). Admittedly, some companies on the list are in other parts of BC. However, the newspaper reports that there are about 5,000 companies engaged in high-tech in Vancouver, so I have a ways to go, even if I probably do have all the major ones.
Most of these companies are small to medium-sized. However, there are a scattering of large local companies and branch offices of international companies. In the five years that I've been keeping track, more branch offices and medium-sized companies have emerged. The dot-com bust has had some effect, but currently there's even a number of startups that have found venture capital.
In short, the pool of possible employers is large and thriving. Unless your goal is to work for a mega-corporation, you shouldn't have any trouble finding contracting work.
