One way to avoid forcing people you're thanking from actually reading your
response (and thus keep them from wasting time by opening the supposedly
offending email) is to include (nm) in the subject line and leave the
message area blank.

Usually, this means "no message" - the subject line itself is the message.
So in a circumstance where someone gave you nifty advice on whatever, the
subject line would read:

Thanks for nifty advice on XXX! (nm)

The person read the subject line, smiles in gratitude to the pleasantry, and
deletes it without opening.

A bit of bandwidth saved, a bit of time saved, and the rules of civilized
etiquette are preserved -- only to await their next challenge from the
hordes of the uncouth.
