Rebecca asks about the prospect of a 20% drop in expected salary after a recent layoff.
This is definitely an employer's market ... from the "man-who-has-the-bux" perspective, it is reasonable for an employer to get the most bang for the buck. In this economy, they probably have scads of applicants to choose from, even at a lower rate than they would have offered a mere two years ago.
That said ... keep in mind Anne's rule of employment: it is a negotiation. And what many people seem to forget is that your salary is only ONE negotiating point. If you find that all else being equal you'd like to work there but the $$ seems low, negotiate for other perks. Use your imagination! Negotiating points that come immediately to mind include extra PTO; POT (paid overtime) or one-for-one comp time for hours worked in excess of, oh, 45 per week; paid conferences/seminars; membership at a local health club ...

Anne Halsey
