Just to add one more suggestion to the pile ...

... I would have thought that the first place to start was Jakob Nielsen's
site, www.useit.com. Nielsen's name is typically followed by the words
"usability guru"; groovy web site designers hate him, so he must be doing
something right. He has a list of recommended reading at
www.useit.com/books/uibooks.html.

A chattier alternative is www.asktog.com, a site run by Nielsen's colleague
Bruce Tognazzini. A pleasing combination of commonsense advice and
intelligently directed spleen.
