In a way, contracting is a constant job-hunt. You should always be thinking ahead and setting up the next job. If you like where you are, let people know that you'd be interested in an extension. At the same time, if the company is struggling, start exploring other possibilities, too.

If I find a better, stable job, can I
stop a contract mid-way?
Unless you're ill or have some other personal emergency, never leave a contract before it's over. As a contractor, your reputation for professionalism is one of your most important assets. If you behave unprofessionally, word may get out. The pool of possible employers in any area is small enough that many employers talk with others, and people move around. Any short-term advantage you get could easily be outweighed by the long-term consequences.

Just as importantly, you have to live with yourself. Going against your ethics simply isn't a way to feel good about yourself.
