Just having suffered a Microsoft Word 2002 meltdown on a fairly simple
file with graphics and numbered lists, I have this to offer:
>> Does it seem curious to you that Microsoft has built-in the Microsoft
Word document "Recovery" feature? Hmmmmmm? <<
BTW, I can't say document recovery doesn't, because it did. But, it's no
better than reverting to a previously saved and archived and protected
version and is less certain, because who knows what is going to be
recovered?
Cheers,
Sean

1) Autonumbering. <snip>
2) Laying out graphics by floating is unreliable, even with locked
anchors; <snip>
3) Even with auto- features turned off, Microsoft Word standard styles,
as set by Microsoft programmers, sneak into your document. <snip>
4) Styles are unreliable and moving your DOC to other PCs can overwrite
your styles with disastrous results. <snip>
5) Microsoft has reserved so many style names, it is actually difficult
to come up with new ones. <snip>
6) Extensively customizing Normal.dot in Word 95 and 97 cause
instabilities in MS Word. <snip>
7) Every so often, your template becomes corrupt--Normal.dot as well as
your custom template <snip>
8) Master docs has been broken since version 6 <snip>
9) Word's list of styles is a pain to use, to the point that it
discourages style use <snip>
10) What, still no hypertext for index entries? <snip>
