Joanne writes that "while 'Come, let us reason together' is
the best policy, it is not universally effective."
It reminds me of an observation I heard somewhere:
1. The two primary modes of human interaction are
confrontation and cooperation.
2. Everyone knows that cooperation is preferable
to confrontation.
3. Cooperation must be based on mutual respect.
4. Mutual respect is born of confrontation.
Not universally true either, of course. You can indeed
run into someone who "is overly polite... to the point
that no one knows what he really wants."
At one old workplace of mine, the trainer dreaded working in
Japan because he said he could never discern when he was
not being understood. He said that no one would tell
him he hadn't been understood... not because the
students were reluctant to expose themselves as slow
of understanding but because they were reluctant to
hurt him by implying he was unsuccessful in explanation.
