My first thought, when reading this post is: You mean the client doesn't
*know* everything their application does?
That said, I recently worked for a company whose client had, I think, one
programmer, and everything about the program being developed was in that
programmes head. Nothing in writing, no spec, no schedule, nothing.
Document how the standalone app works now, thoroughly. When they app is
converted to the web, users will presumably be able to do mostly the same
things, so you'll have identified tasks that can be done and their
organization already, so you can mostly just tweak existing content to match
the way the Web app willl work.

I've been asked to create user documentation for a client's existing custom
application . No problem. However, they want me to do this with the
understanding that they will be moving from this stand-alone desktop
application to a web application in the next 18 months. One of the reason's
they want to document the app now, is to get down on paper everything the
application does, to aid them in converting the application to a web app. -
which my company will also be doing.
