Most DTP apps have widow and orphan control, which automatically takes care of this problem.

No, they don't. What Dianna called 'orphans' is different from what DTP applications call 'orphans': She talks about very short lines at the end of paragraphs; DTP applications control single lines of paragraphs left at the top or bottom of a page.
