Evidently you do luck out to some extent, Goober.
In lessons from your experience, you imply that
the writer can earn respect by providing extra
added value at his own initiative. To me, this
means that (a) the writer is allotted sufficient
time not only to meet the employer's expectations
but-- -- by investing a mere 5-10 hours extra a
week, in your case-- to exceed them; and (b) when
the writer gets involved in "other high priority/
high visibility projects," the writer's supervisors
do not feel threatened.
Not all workplaces are exactly like that.

And by the way, as a general point, when someone writes
in the subject line that a message is "long" or "longish",
it would be nice if folks sending short replies to
the message deleted hte part about the length...
