Seriously though, is there really a belief that UK English
is all pompous drivel while US English is all a wonder of
economy, or is this just a left-pondian prejudice?
Irony understood and appreciated. To answer your question, all I can say is that's the impression (not the pompous drivel part, but the stylistic preferences I alluded to earlier) that I've gotten from past discussions on techwr-l of localization/localisation issues--discussions in which UKers had their say. Maybe they were Oxonians and you're a Cantabridgian, or vice versa, in which case I don't suppose there will ever be a consensus on this question.
