TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Tom Barnett, a member of STC-Phoenix, was the manager of the
newsletter competition this year. I asked him for some stats to ease
inquiring minds.

There were only three Distinguished Awards in the Newsletter
Competition this year. The winners of those awards came from the US,
Canada, and India. Two-thirds of the highest awards went to non-US
newsletters. One-third went to a non-North American newsletter.
That's a pretty good disbursement of the top awards. BTW, there was
only one point difference in these three newsletters' scores. And the
Best of Show Award is not subjectively selected. It's done purely on
a point system. Given the variableness of the judges, Best of Show
could have easily gone to one of the non-US newsletters.
The question is why are not more non-North American STC newsletters
recognized in the competition. I've entertained questions like this
with respect to STC competitions in general. They are legitimate
questions, but the answers are generally the same.
In this case, the answer could not be more simple. Only one non-North
American STC newsletter entered the competition, and that newsletter
was a point from winning Best of Show.
The following information will be on a handout at the STC Newsletter
Forum at the Annual Conference. (And presumably posted on the Web).
