The latter, to a degree. Talk to whoever placed you in this position NOW, meaning RIGHT NOW and not some time later when you think about it. Call them, not e-mail, not IM, not fax, or pony express... call them NOW. Lay the facts on the table. Cite, word for word, the job description they used to place you, and compare/contrast it with the actual work the client wants you to perform, hitting every detail.
Like I suggested already, approach this honestly and with good intentions, and without blaming anyone. Try to determine if the description was in fact correct, and let the placement people who got you this gig determine if the client is trying to squeeze out way more bang for the buck, or if the advertised job description was in fact incorrect.
But you need to talk to them NOW. The longer you wait, the worse the situation will be for everyone (you, the vendor who placed you, and the client).
