TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
A client has recently asked to give them an estimate for developing a style
guide for their marketing collateral. I am using the following questions to
gather information:
1. A list and examples of all the types of documents your group produces.
2. A list of any existing style guidelines (AP, Microsoft Manual for Tech
Pubs, Chicago Manual of Style, etc etc) your marketing group uses, or your
corporate marketing group (do you have a corporate marketing style guide you
must adhere to?) requires you to adhere to.
3. Any unofficial and informal style-type information you have provided to
previous writers (this could even be in the form of previous emails you have
sent writers commenting on their work, etc etc).
4. The number of reviews you would like this style guide to have before it
becomes official.
5. The number of individuals you would like to review the style guide and
the departments they belong to.
6. In what final format would you like this guide? Word? PDF? Typeset by a
printer?
7. When would you like this project to begin and to end?
What other types questions/issues should I be considering when developing
this estimate?
Thanks
Greg
