In my experience, the "nontraditional role" was the technical writer who 
had no technical education or grounding and who was hired strictly as 
a "documentation specialist."  Prior to the SW boom of the past 20 
years or so, most "technical writers" were either former engineers on
a pre-retirement track or new engineering grads with good writing skills 
working on documents to get their feet in the door as engineers, and 
all were expected to pitch in as testers, design reviewers and various 
other non-writing support in the product development process.  

I wonder just how long it takes for something to become "traditional."
