TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
So I'm perusing the Sunday New York Times this morning and immediately
following a full-page (!) advertisement from Perdue Chicken mourning the
death of Frank Perdue, I run across this gem: A half-page ad that
presumably ran in other major Sunday papers around the country from
OneTouch. The slug at the top of the ad is "OneTouch Daylight Saving
Time Reminder. The remainder of the ad consists of instructions on how
to set your OneTouch blood glucose meter for daylight saving time (Isn't
it daylight savings, not saving? But I digress).
If you STILL need help, you can call a toll-free number or visit the
company's Web site.
Now, pardon me, but it seems that something must be broken here. No
matter how popular this particular device might be among diabetics, if
the cost of running this ad (twice a year!) is less than the cost of
answering phone calls from confused users, somebody screwed up
somewhere. Either the user interface is so badly designed that even the
printed product manual can't help, or the the printed manual was so
poorly funded or badly executed that the company had to pay advertising
copywriters and art directors to do a better job than their tech writers
did.
