let the agencies who don't want to give you the info you need in
order to quote the job just hang up. They'll look for another
victim, but hopefully the victim pool will srink as others are educated on the practice.
Just an addition: In a cutthroat situation like this, it's not unethical to take the gig, establish your worth with the client employer, then renegotiate better terms *with the agency* -- who by then will want to keep the client happy.
If their end is $100/hr and yours is $35, they can afford $50 on an in-place, proven performer.
