Corporate World vs. Small Company: Considerations?
Subject:Corporate World vs. Small Company: Considerations? From:"Amy P." <amydetroit -at- gmail -dot- com> To:"TECHWR-L" <techwr-l -at- lists -dot- techwr-l -dot- com> Date:Wed, 21 Sep 2005 09:32:26 -0400
Hello, all:
In addition to what I'm finding in the archives, I wonder if any of
you have insights I may not be thinking of in deciding whether to
leave a big company for a smaller one. No magic formula, of course,
but just thought I'd prevail upon the wisdom of experience
here---might point out something I'm not thinking of.
I'm currently making an excellent wage at a big corporation. Nice
people. Modern environment. Shitty commute. B-o-r-i-n-g work (maybe
it all gets boring once you figure it out).
I'm being offered a position in a smaller office setting with 1980s
decor and a beautiful commute through trees instead of construction
and blight. The company is developing new scientific instrumentation
that seems to be cutting edge, highly technical, and doing well. They
will train me to use the products and consider me part of the
engineering team. I like the homey, brainy, low-key atmosphere. That
said, they can't match what I'm making, and will likely come in
$10,000-$20,000 less.
Money may be the bottom line, but I want to take into account the
working environment, too. It *seems* so nice to go smaller and more
casual right now. But corporate obscurity does have its benefits.
Blah blah blah.
Just thought I'd mention it here; I respect the list very much.
Thanks and happy Wednesday,
