Re: Techwhirlers, re: rude email
Actually, it wasn't a flame.
No, but I'd say you were over-reacting.
I've lived absolutely everywhere in the
world except Africa. Was I treated rudely in Singapore
or Hong Kong? Perhaps. Was I ever scared for my
safety because I'm an attractive redhead--no,
That's actually quite a good answer to her question.
It also matches my experience. I'm an older male
who has lived in several Asian countries and spent
some time in India. In my experience, Western
women, especially blondes or redheads, do get
noticed and hit on a lot by Asian men.
I've seen nothing to indicate that Asian men are
more often obnoxious idiots about this than
Western men. It does happen, but is fairly rare.
I would suggest asking a local woman for a
choice phrase ot two to cut down any oaf
who is really out of line.
In Moslem countries, and Moslem areas of India,
there are some restrictions on female dress. In
my experience, India is pretty relaxed about this,
but I have not been there in years and perhaps
not to the area she would go to.
In a really conservative Moslem area (say, Iran),
exposed hair or bare arms can be expected to
affect local men roughly the way a short skirt
or plunging neckline affects me. Women not
aiming for that effect should dress accordingly.
