Thanks to everyone for their advice about finding a technical writing internshi
p. I was just wondering if there is anyone who has actually had a technical wri
ting internship or apprenticeship and what your experiences were like.
When I moved from engineering to technical writing, I apprenticed
under in an office filled with writers having up to 20 years
experience. They were brutal, but they also taught me that technical
writing is hard work and it's also very rewarding. I remember one day
sitting at a layout table while the department head cut my sentences
apart (this was pre-desktop computer days) and then rearranged
everything using double sided tape. When he was finished, there was
the revised text and a pile of unused verbiage. Years later, after I
returned to college, my journalism professor told everyone about
"deadwood." He didn't have to explain anymore. I knew exactly what
he was talking about.
My advice is to not take an internship lightly and do not allow your
mentors to go lightly on your work.
